Where do
laboratory animals come from?
 |
 |
 |
| Rat breeding:
mother rat with offspring. |
|
Bayer obtains its laboratory animals almost exclusively from
qualified breeders who are authorized specifically to breed
laboratory animals. Without the appropriate official authorization,
Bayer would not work with them. The breeders are also inspected
by Bayer’s
Animal Welfare Officer. The farms are also monitored continuously
by the relevant veterinary authorities.
Only in the following exceptional cases does Bayer depart from
this tried-and-tested procedure:
- Where no official breeders exist for agricultural livestock
and fish. Bayer obtains these animals from selected agricultural
farms and fisheries – an exception expressly permitted
under the German Animal Welfare Law.
- Bayer breeds a small number of its own animals. These
are mainly genetically modified (transgenic)
mice.
